Tumescent liposuction. With this technique, your surgeon will inject a solution made up of saline, lidocaine anesthetic and epineprhine into your fatty areas before the fat is removed. The combined components of the solution help the surgeon remove the fat more easily, helps reduce blood loss, and eases post-procedural pain.
Ultrasound-assisted liposuction. With ultrasound-assisted liposuction, ultrasonic energy is used to help loosen and melt fat, which is then removed from your body.
Depending on the type of liposuction you choose, you may be able to have it done as an inpatient procedure at a doctor’s office or surgery center and go home the same day. If large amounts of fat will be removed, the procedure will be done in a hospital, and you may need to stay overnight. Either way, you will be given an anesthetic. For the removal of smaller amounts of fat you will be most likely given a local anesthetic. For removal of larger amounts of fat, you will most likely be given general anesthesia, which will “knock you out” during the procedure. The length of the procedure depends on how much fat is being removed.
Minimal Scarring

Recovery and Results
If your liposuction surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure, you should be able to return to work within a few days and get back to all of your normal activities within two weeks. For more extensive liposuction performed in a hospital the recovery will be slightly longer. Either way, you will experience bruising, swelling, and soreness for at least a few weeks.
You’ll notice immediate results from the liposuction surgery as the swelling fades, since fat cells have been permanently removed. That doesn’t mean, however, that your results are permanent. If you do gain some weight, it won’t migrate to the area where you had the liposuction performed. But to keep your new sleeker shape and new weight after liposuction, you’ll need to follow a diet and exercise plan that your physician will set up for you.
