Exercise After Liposuction – Should You Do It?

At Plastic Surgery Institute Miami, we believe in a concentrated team effort on the doctor’s part as well as the Liposuction patient’s part in order to guarantee healthy, aesthetically appealing results that everyone is happy with. A team approach guarantees that everyone is invested in making the procedure a success, and it empowers each patient with the knowledge on how to best care for themselves once they leave the doctor’s office.

The best way for patients to be completely satisfied with results and the best way to empower them with the proper steps to take in regards to their health is to educate them on the preparation of the procedure, on the procedure itself, and on post-surgery recovery. Though each step in this process is vital to success, we do put emphasis on post-surgery recovery for certain procedures more than others.

With liposuction, for example, we want to be very thorough in ensuring that your body maintains good health, because we understand that it’s going through a time of abrupt yet major transition. Our liposuction doctors in Miami can shed some light on best practices in terms of post-liposuction health. So, in case you’re wondering, we’ll address it here: with liposuction, where does exercise come into play?

Liposuction – A Review

Before we fill you in on exercise after liposuction, let’s just go over what, exactly Miami liposuction is. Having a good understanding of the procedure itself will help ensure you understand the “why” behind post-surgical exercise recommendations and warnings. Speaking in everyday terms, liposuction is a cosmetic procedure that removes excess fat deposits from various parts on the body. Generally speaking, it’s a simple procedure with a fairly short recovery time; however, recovery time may depend on the type of procedure, and sometimes certain situations may warrant a longer recovery.

Exercise… Should You Go There?

Your body will certainly take a different shape when the surgery is over, so will exercise even be healthy or necessary for you? Some people are afraid that exercise will be unhealthy given their abrupt transition from overweight to healthy weight, especially if done quickly after their surgery. The fact of the matter is that not only is following a recommended exercise regimen vital to your recovery, it’s an imperative part of your long term health and guaranteeing that your results are permanent.

As we mentioned before, we at PSI Miami can give you flawless results, but it’s up to you to ensure they stick around. As many people come to understand, though aesthetic results are nearly instant, liposuction is not a quick fix for weight loss; it will not solve an underlying issue. Rather, it’s more or less a jumpstarting technique that will reset your body for a healthier way of life. What does this mean? Diet and exercise are key components of ensuring that the weight that comes off in the procedure actually stays off. Without a regular exercise regimen, liposuction patients are more likely to be unhappy with longterm results as their weight is likely to come back with a vengeance.

When Can You Go There?

liposuction doctors in MiamiSo as we’ve just established, it’s not a matter of whether or not you can exercise after liposuction, it’s simply when and how. Light physical activity one to two days post-surgery isn’t just permitted, it’s actually recommended by doctors to reduce chances of clotting. Beyond that? Light aerobic exercise (mostly walking) is recommended within four days of surgery. We recommend that patients listen to their bodies as everyone heals differently, and to respect their own limitations when they feel tired quickly, unexpected pain, or unusual soreness when returning to exercise. As a general guideline, we recommend that people begin exercising at 25% of their full effort when they begin light aerobic exercise and increase only as tolerated. Also, we highly recommend that patients wait at least three weeks to perform higher impact training, such as running or high intensity intervals.

Get a Trainer

Our last piece of advice regarding liposuction and exercise? Don’t feel as though you have to go at it alone. We find that the biggest hindrance to establishing a regular exercise routine is that patients feel overwhelmed to start something they’ve never made a priority, or they feel like they’re alone in their journey. At PSI Miami, we want you to know that you’re not alone, and we can help give you the jumpstart you need to get on track with healthy exercise. A trainer will be so helpful in ensuring you’re on the right, healthy track, and will provide resources and accountability along the way.
