A labiaplasty is a surgical procedure designed to reduce the size of the labia minora, or the inner vaginal lips for cosmetic or functional reasons, or both. During labiaplasty, the surgeon can reduce the size of the labia by eliminating excess tissue. Elongated or enlarged labia can be congenital, or present from birth, but can also be caused by hormonal changes, pregnancy, aging, and other factors. (1) Women experiencing discomfort, chafing, or even pain due to their labia can experience improvements in their daily comfort after undergoing labiaplasty.

About Labiaplasties
A labiaplasty is a procedure designed to eliminate excess skin and tissue from the labia minora to improve one’s intimate appearance and daily comfort. Overly large labia, also known as labial hypertrophy, is a common concern amongst many women and can cause physical irritation and self-consciousness. Genital aesthetic procedures have grown in popularity over the last several years, with labiaplasties experiencing a 2% growth in popularity; over 10,600 labiaplasty procedures were performed in the year 2023 alone. Benefits of Labiaplasty
There are many benefits patients can experience after receiving a labiaplasty, both cosmetic and functional. These benefits may include the following:
- Improved Comfort: Women with elongated labia may be able to engage in physical activities and sexual intercourse without pain or discomfort previously caused by their labia.
- Rejuvenated Appearance: Reducing the size of the labia can create a neater, more symmetrical look.
- Alleviated Irritation: Those experiencing recurrent infections or inflammation may experience relief and an improvement in these occurrences after a labiaplasty. (3)
- Enhanced Confidence: Many women report an improvement in self-esteem and confidence after undergoing a labiaplasty.
- Minimal Scarring: Our surgeons place incisions in discreet areas, minimizing any visual scarring after the procedure.
- Better Clothing Fit: Many women feel more comfortable wearing tighter, form-fitting clothing and swimwear.
Candidates for Labiaplasty
Candidates for labiaplasty include those experiencing daily discomfort or pain due to overly large or elongated labia minora. Women dissatisfied with the shape or size of their labia, as well as anyone interested in improving the appearance of their labia, may find this procedure beneficial.
All candidates interested in labiaplasty should be in good overall health, free from any underlying medical conditions that may impair healing. Patients should also hold realistic expectations about what this procedure can accomplish. Individuals should be nonsmokers or prepared to quit several weeks before the procedure, refraining from use until fully healed. Our surgeon will determine each patient’s candidacy at their personal consultation.
Personal Consultation
Each patient is required to attend a personal consultation with their surgeon before scheduling their labiaplasty procedure. This meeting is not only a chance for our team to meet each patient but also to understand how we can best help them achieve their goals. The surgeon will perform a medical examination to evaluate the condition of each patient’s anatomy before discussing their medical history, concerns, and goals. After determining their candidacy, the surgeon will craft each patient’s labiaplasty procedure, personalizing certain aspects to address their concerns. Pre-operative and post-operative instructions will be provided alongside an all-inclusive quote.

Preparation
Every patient will receive a set of pre-operative instructions at their consultation to help them properly prepare for their labiaplasty. Instructions may vary between individuals depending on the details of their procedure and their lifestyle habits.
Each patient will need to pre-arrange transportation home after their procedure, in addition to arranging for time away from work and other social commitments to ensure proper healing.
Certain medications and supplements should be temporarily avoided, specifically those containing blood-thinning properties. Those who smoke will need to quit several weeks in advance, ceasing any nicotine consumption until fully recovered. Alcohol should also be avoided a few days before and after the procedure.
Procedure
Each patient’s labiaplasty will begin with the cleansing and sanitization of their skin before local anesthesia, with or without sedation, is administered. During the procedure, the surgeon will carefully remove excess tissue to create a more symmetrical, pleasing appearance. There are two techniques that our surgeons can perform to help achieve the desired results: the trim technique and the wedge technique.
- Trim Technique: The trim technique is a simple strategy that can be used to help adjust and minimize the size and shape of the labia minora. The surgeon will remove excess tissue from the outer edge inner vaginal lips to create a neater appearance. This technique is ideal for those concerned with discoloration and can offer a shorter procedure duration.
- Wedge Technique: The wedge technique involves removing a V-shaped wedge of tissue from the center of the vaginal lips, preserving the natural outer edges of the labia. This technique is ideal for those interested in maintaining a more natural appearance in their labia.
The surgeon can employ other techniques throughout the procedure, such as a clitoral hood reduction or labia majora reduction, to help each patient achieve their ideal aesthetic. The duration of a labiaplasty is shorter compared to other treatments, often lasting approximately 1-2 hours in duration.
Recovery
Labiaplasties are typically performed on an outpatient basis, meaning the patient can return home on the same day as their procedure. It is common to experience bruising, swelling, or soreness in the treatment area, but these effects may be managed through the use of pain medications under the guidance of our team and often subside within the first week of healing.
Patients often return to work within 1-2 weeks but should refrain from physical activity, heavy lifting, and other strenuous tasks for several weeks. Sexual activity and tampon use should also be avoided until fully healed or approved by the surgeon. Further instructions will be provided by our team at each patient’s consultation.
Results
The results of each patient’s labiaplasty can be seen as soon as any residual swelling dissipates. Patients will be able to enjoy their newly reduced labia, as well as an overall improvement in comfort. Women can enjoy wearing tighter, more form-fitting clothing, as well as enjoy physical activities without any discomfort caused by overly large labia. Those with elongated labia will also be able to experience a reduction in pain during sexual activities. Additionally, those who have struggled with recurrent infections caused by excess tissue may be able to see an improvement in their intimate health. Labiaplasty has a high satisfaction rate, exceeding 90% (1), especially when performed by an expert surgeon at the Plastic Surgery Institute of Miami.
