Blepharoplasty – the medical term for eyelid rejuvenation – is an effective way to remove bags under the eyes and puffiness, making your face look years younger. Eliminating fat erases the puffy look, and tightening skin and eliminating the excess gets rid of those persistent bags. While blepharoplasty doesn’t get rid of dark circles under the eyes or crow’s feet, many people are extremely happy with its revitalizing effects.
You can choose to get blepharoplasty on either your top eyelids, your bottom eyelids, or both sets of lids. If you’re getting both sets done at once, the procedure can take up to two hours. It begins with either general anesthesia or local with sedation, depending on the plan you created with your surgeon.
For the top-eyelid blepharoplasty, a cut is created in the natural crease area of the lid. The incision is made with either a scalpel, a very precise laser, or medical scissors. The surgeon then carefully trims away excess skin, muscle, and fat. With the top lid, excess skin is the most likely problem to be addressed.
For the bottom-eyelid rejuvenation surgery, the incision is placed on the inward-facing side of the lid or on the outside below the eyelashes. The excision process is then repeated. Excess fat and skin are the most frequent issues with the bottom lid. After the tissues have been removed, the surgeon uses surgical tape, glue, or sutures to seal the incision sites. Bandages are used to cover the incisions.
