About Asian Rhinoplasties
The Asian rhinoplasty procedure is a unique procedure tailored to help maintain the cultural and ethnic features of the nose while restructuring and providing an enhanced appearance and shape. Different techniques can be used to help achieve one’s ideal profile including nose tip refinement, nasal bridge augmentation, or a reduction in the alar base. The alar base is the triangular area in the nose where the nostrils meet the cheeks and upper lip area. (1) No matter what your ideal nose looks like, Dr. Ghersi can help you reach the sculpt you have always envisioned.

Benefits of an Asian Rhinoplasty
There are many benefits to an Asian rhinoplasty procedure both cosmetic and functional. A rhinoplasty can help create a more sculpted nasal profile through the augmentation and slope of the nasal bridge. The definition and the shape of the nasal tip can also be refined, creating a subtle, long-lasting change. Restructuring the nose can help restore the balance between different facial features and create a more aesthetically pleasing look while preserving the ethnic and cultural characteristics of the nasal structure. Patients can also address functional conditions such as deviated septums or nasal blockages as well as deformities caused by injury, trauma, or congenital defects. (2)
Ideal Candidates
Ideal candidates for this procedure are those interested in aesthetically or functionally enhancing their noses through the use of implants, grafts, or restructuring. This procedure is best for individuals who are currently experiencing an undefined or wide nasal tip, low or flat nasal bridge, or flared nostrils. Patients with a disproportionally sized nose or patients interested in restoring their facial harmony overall may be interested in an Asian rhinoplasty procedure. Patients experiencing nasal blockages or breathing difficulties may also experience relief through an Asian rhinoplasty procedure. All candidates interested in undergoing a rhinoplasty should be in good overall health with no underlying medical conditions that may impair healing.

Procedure
The procedure begins with the administration of anesthesia to ensure the patient feels comfortable and relaxed during the procedure. Dr. Ghersi will then make an incision either inside the nostrils for a closed rhinoplasty, or in the flesh between the two nostrils, also known as the columella for an open rhinoplasty. A closed rhinoplasty means the sutures are inside the nostrils; this technique is usually reserved for minor adjustments. An open rhinoplasty means there will be minimal scarring on the columella. (1) The incision placement will be determined at your consultation depending on the treatment plan needed to help you achieve your desired contour.
For many Asian patients undergoing this procedure, their nasal bridge is typically augmented to create a more defined bridge profile. This change can be made through the use of a synthetic implant or a graft. Implants are typically made from a biocompatible material such as silicone or Gore-Tex. Gore-Tex is composed of a body-safe material called polytetrafluoroethylene (e-PTFE), a specialized material designed to allow the body’s natural tissue to grow into the implant. (3) A graft procedure would require cartilage from the ear, septum, or other donor site to be collected. The harvested cartilage is then reshaped and used to help build the nasal bridge up. (3) Both augmentation procedures provide long-lasting results with unique benefits to help patients of all backgrounds achieve the sculpt they have always wanted.
After the nasal bridge is adjusted, Dr. Ghersi will adjust the nasal tip if needed and reshape it to restore facial balance. This can be achieved through the use of specialized suturing techniques to restabilize the nose tip or cartilage grafting. Grafts can be taken from the septal or ear cartilage and excess tissue in the nose is removed. (3)
For patients interested in reshaping wide nostrils, Dr. Ghersi will help remove excess tissue at the base of the nose. Incisions are usually made at the alar base before sutures are used to help create a slimmer base. The alar base is the area at the bottom of the nose that meets the cheeks and upper lip. The incisions are then closed either at the columella for an open rhinoplasty, or inside the nostrils for a closed rhinoplasty. No matter what incision is chosen for the procedure, Dr. Ghersi will use only the most advanced techniques to help hide and minimize any visible scarring. The entire procedure can take anywhere from 2-4 hours depending on the chosen procedure.
Recovery and Results
Following an Asian rhinoplasty procedure, patients can expect to feel a mild amount of discomfort in the treatment area. Dr. Ghersi may place a splint on the patient to help support the new shape of the nose, and to protect the treatment area during the first week of the recovery process. Patients may feel like their breathing is slightly blocked for the first few days of recovery while the splint is placed on their nasal canal. Any pain felt by the patient during recovery can be managed through the use of over-the-counter medications. Throughout the first week of healing, patients should make an effort to avoid bending over or engaging in strenuous physical activities. After about 2-4 weeks, patients can start returning to their daily routine and the swelling will gradually subside, however, patients should still avoid wearing glasses directly in the treatment area. It can take up to 12 months for the full results of the rhinoplasty to be seen in the patient as any residual swelling decreases.
Patients should follow any recovery instructions as directed by Dr. Ghersi or another member of our team to ensure optimal results from a rhinoplasty. Patients may be asked to attend follow-up appointments to address any concerns and ensure the treatment area is healing correctly.
Cost of an Asian Rhinoplasty in Miami
The cost of each rhinoplasty can depend on several factors as each procedure is fully customized to each patient and their unique concerns and symptoms. Dr. Ghersi will sit down with each patient at their consultation to discuss the full cost of their rhinoplasty once a better understanding of the treatment plan and desired outcome is discussed.
