About Ethnic Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty is a complex procedure that manipulates the intricate anatomy of the nose, which consists of bone, cartilage, and soft tissue. Each patient’s nose is unique, and as such, rhinoplasty requires careful, personalized planning and focus on one’s facial anatomy. Ethnic rhinoplasty, in particular, pays special attention to reshaping and enhancing the function of one’s nose while maintaining the unique physical characteristics of one’s ethnicity. (1) Many of the techniques that apply to Caucasian patients may not apply to patients of other (or mixed) races. (1) By considering these unique characteristics during planning, Dr. Ghersi can help you achieve your desired nasal aesthetics while preserving your ethnic identity.
Benefits
Rhinoplasty offers numerous advantages, which can lead to increased self-esteem and satisfaction with one’s appearance. Ethnic rhinoplasty also offers the important benefit of allowing patients to improve their appearance while retaining their unique cultural identity. When patients undergo a personalized rhinoplasty procedure at Plastic Surgery Institute Miami, they typically experience:
- Improved facial harmony: Reshaping your nose can bring balance to other facial features, enhancing overall aesthetics.
- Increased confidence: Many patients feel more comfortable in social situations after undergoing rhinoplasty.
- Better breathing ability: Functional rhinoplasty can resolve breathing difficulties caused by structural issues.
- Enhanced self-image: Patients report feeling a boost in their self-image following surgical correction.
- Targeted changes: The surgery allows for precise alterations, such as dorsal hump reduction or tip refinement without affecting other facial structures.
- Customizable results: Techniques used can be tailored specifically to each individual’s unique anatomy and desired outcome.
- Long-lasting changes: While the aging process continues, the results achieved through rhinoplasty are typically enduring.
- Minimal scarring: Incisions can often be hidden inside the nose (closed rhinoplasty), resulting in less visible scars.
- Fast recovery: Dr. Ghersi and Dr. Puyana’s attention to detail and advanced techniques help to reduce each patient’s recovery time, allowing them to enjoy their results sooner.
Candidates
Rhinoplasty is available for any individual who has an issue with their nose that they would like to correct through surgical means. We generally advise that patients be at least 15 years old, as this is when facial bones have sufficiently matured. Patients should also be in good overall health without any serious underlying conditions. Finally, maintaining realistic expectations about results and being willing to collaborate with the team at Plastic Surgery Institute Miami will help patients achieve stunning results.
Personal Consultation
A personal consultation is an important first step in the rhinoplasty process. Because each rhinoplasty is different, Dr. Ghersi must examine your nose in person and discuss your goals in depth. They will perform a careful examination of the nose, checking for any functional concerns and assessing the underlying structures. Your medical history and procedural options will also be discussed at this appointment. Photographs may be taken to plan your surgery accurately, and digital imaging technology may be used to help visualize possible outcomes. Open communication during this session is crucial for developing a tailored approach suited to your needs.

Preparation
Each patient will receive specific preparation instructions that reflect their unique medical history and the goals of their procedure. These vary for each case, but most patients should plan to:
- Alter their medication use to avoid any blood-thinning compounds
- Avoid alcohol and nicotine consumption
- Arrange transportation to and from their scheduled treatment
- Fill any prescriptions for antibiotics or pain medications before their procedure
- Schedule time off of work for recovery
- Wash their face and nose thoroughly
Procedure
Different techniques may be used in your rhinoplasty depending on your goals, your ethnicity, and your unique facial structure. Most rhinoplasty procedures are performed either as open rhinoplasty or closed rhinoplasty.
Open Rhinoplasty
In an open rhinoplasty, the skin is lifted to expose the internal structures and connective tissue in the nose. (2) Incisions are made around the bridge of the nose, the columella and septum, and more. Once the necessary corrections are made, the skin is redraped over the nose. Our team will dress your treatment area to promote healthy and fast healing. Open rhinoplasty procedures offer better access and visibility to nasal structures, but they can also lead to longer recovery times than closed rhinoplasty methods. (2)
Closed Rhinoplasty
In a closed rhinoplasty, all corrections to the nose and its structural elements are made through the nostrils. While this avoids external incisions, access to the nose is more limited. Closed rhinoplasty procedures are generally reserved for patients who do not require extensive reshaping or complex alterations to the nose, like those with protruding septums. (2)
Recovery
You will receive specific instructions on how to best recover from rhinoplasty and care for your healing nose. You should avoid bumping, touching, and blowing your nose as much as possible. Activities like swimming and intense exercise should be avoided for a few weeks. Patients should not wear makeup while their nose heals. When washing their face, patients should apply very gentle pressure. Patients who wear glasses may want to switch to contact lenses for a few weeks. You will have regular follow-up appointments with Dr. Ghersi to monitor your healing progress.
Results
The final results of your rhinoplasty may take a few months to a year to fully emerge. However, you will see improvements and gradual changes as your healing progresses. Individuals should remain confident and patient while they heal and understand that their results will appear in time, once swelling dissipates and bandages are removed. Once results do appear, patients are regularly happy with the long-lasting results they receive from Plastic Surgery Institute Miami.
Corresponding & Complementary Procedures
Plastic Surgery Institute Miami offers various dermal fillers that can add volume to parts of the face without the complex planning and techniques involved in surgical rhinoplasty. Because of this, many patients will opt to use dermal fillers as a “trial run” for their rhinoplasty. These dermal fillers are reversible and semi-permanent. Many patients can visualize changes in their nose and facial structure with these injectables to better understand the final results they want to achieve with surgical rhinoplasty.
Cost of Ethnic Rhinoplasty in Miami
Ethnic rhinoplasty procedures are custom-tailored to each patient’s unique ethnicity, facial anatomy, goals, preferences, and more. Because of this, the cost of rhinoplasty can differ greatly depending on the corrections being made and what is required by the procedure and patient. When you meet with one of the expert providers at Plastic Surgery Institute Miami for a consultation, you will be given a cost estimate for your treatment.

FAQ
What is the best age for rhinoplasty?
Many physicians recommend waiting until the nose has sufficiently developed–usually after age 15 for females and 16 for males–until considering a surgical rhinoplasty.
What are some of the things surgeons have to consider in an ethnic rhinoplasty?
The surgeon will consider differences in nasal skin thickness, cartilage strength, nostril flare, jawbone harmony, bridge position and height, tip size and angle, and more, as these traits vary across different ethnicities.
Will I have visible scars after an ethnic rhinoplasty?
With closed rhinoplasty, incisions are hidden inside the nostrils, resulting in no visible scars. Open techniques require external scarring in discreet locations.
Is recovering from rhinoplasty painful?
Most patients experience mild to moderate discomfort, which can be managed effectively with prescribed pain relief medications.
When will I see the final results of my rhinoplasty?
Swelling decreases substantially over the first few weeks, but complete results may take up to one year to settle fully as residual swelling resolves and the nose settles into its new appearance.
