About Male Rhinoplasty
A rhinoplasty procedure can correct many different aesthetic issues on a patient’s nose. Dorsal humps can be reduced, the nasal tip can be sharpened or rounded, the overall size of the nose can be increased or decreased, the contour of the bridge can be adjusted, and more. Male rhinoplasty treatments must be customized to each patient. Each nose is unique, and creating optimal results requires attentive planning and a thorough understanding of a patient’s nasal anatomy and facial structure.
Typically, male patients have larger noses than women. They also may have larger nostrils and wider nasal bases. The male nose often protrudes further than female noses, has a larger bridge, and has a steeper angle between the upper lip and nasal base. All of these factors must be considered when planning a rhinoplasty procedure to create a result that has a natural-looking appearance while improving the patient’s confidence.
Benefits
At Plastic Surgery Institute Miami, our patients typically experience the following benefits from a male rhinoplasty:
- Enhanced confidence: The nose is one of the defining features of our face, and if it has an appearance that you do not like, it can be hard to carry yourself with the confidence you would like to.
- Harmonious facial appearance: Refining the shape of one’s nose can improve the appearance of the face in many different ways.
- Improved breathing: Rhinoplasty can address some types of deviated septums or nasal obstructions.
- Customization: Rhinoplasty is customized to each patient’s specific facial structure as well as their goals. You can collaborate with Dr. Ghersi to plan your ideal results.
- Restoration: Injuries to the nose can also be addressed with a customized rhinoplasty procedure.
- Long-lasting results: Surgical corrections offer permanent results unlike non-surgical enhancements.
Candidates
Rhinoplasty is an option for any patient who has issues with their nose that they would like to correct. Ideal candidates for a nose job are those who:
- Are in good overall health and do not have any serious chronic conditions
- Do not use nicotine products or are willing to quit for a period
- Maintain realistic expectations for their results
- Are willing to collaborate with Dr. Ghersi and closely follow the preparation and recovery instructions given to them
Personal Consultation
An initial consultation is an important first step. At this appointment, you and Dr. Ghersi will discuss your motivations behind seeking treatment, your goals for your procedure, and the options that are available to you. Effective rhinoplasty treatments require attentive planning and thorough examinations of a patient’s nose and facial structure, so Dr. Ghersi and his team may take photos and measurements of your face and nose to assist in their planning. Dr. Ghersi uses the innovative VECTRA 3D computer simulation system to create a digital model of your face and show you the options for your new nose in real-time.
Preparation
You will receive personalized preparation instructions from Dr. Ghersi once you have scheduled your procedure after your consultation. These vary from patient to patient, but most patients are required to:
- Avoid any blood-thinning compounds for a couple of weeks before their procedures, including alcohol, aspirin, ibuprofen, and certain supplements
- Arrange transportation to and from your rhinoplasty
- Create a comfortable environment to recover in
- Fill any prescriptions prescribed to you by either Dr. Ghersi or your primary care physician
- Cease any nicotine use (if applicable)
Procedure
The male nose typically has a strong bridge, a lower-set tip, and from a profile view, the tip of the nose is set straight in line with the rest of the nose. (1) Dr. Ghersi performs rhinoplasty procedures with a few different methods, the most common being open rhinoplasty. In an open rhinoplasty procedure, a small incision is placed at the base of the nostrils to lift the nasal skin. (2) Once opened, the necessary corrections are performed.
Dr. Ghersi may also employ innovative ultrasonic rhinoplasty techniques in open procedures. With this method, ultrasound surgical instruments are used to carefully sculpt the cartilage and bone without damaging the surrounding tissue. (2) Patients who receive ultrasonic rhinoplasties might experience a faster recovery while still seeing optimal results.
Dr. Ghersi has also successfully performed rhinoplasties with preservation methods. Preservation rhinoplasty, also sometimes referred to as closed rhinoplasty, utilizes fewer incisions to the outer nose. Rather than opening the nose to create access, tissues, bones, and cartilage are manipulated through the nostrils. This is slightly more complex than open rhinoplasty, but it also can reduce the recovery time and produces fewer visible scars than other methods.
Dr. Ghersi takes special precautions to make careful adjustments, ensuring that your results match your goals and you are left with a nose that may improve your facial harmony and confidence.
Recovery
We recommend that patients take about 2-3 weeks off of work and social engagements to recover after a male rhinoplasty. Most patients see a significant improvement in 2 weeks. You can expect your nose to be swollen and sore for a few days after your rhinoplasty. When taking medications, please follow the instructions given to you by Dr. Ghersi and/or your pharmacist.
After 2-3 weeks, or as long as Dr. Ghersi recommends, you can begin resuming your normal activities and routines. You should still avoid any intense exercise or strenuous activity for at least another 2 weeks.
When sleeping, do so on your back with your face up, and elevate your head and neck with extra pillows. Avoid touching your face and nose as much as possible. When cleaning your face, do so very gently. Dr. Ghersi will provide you with more specific instructions for how to wash your face and what soap you should use before you begin your recovery.
If you have any questions during your recovery, please do not hesitate to call our office.
Results
It may take a few months for the final results of your rhinoplasty to settle in, as the nose will be swollen for a period of time. Once this subsides, you will be able to enjoy the enhanced appearance of your nose. This nose should match your unique facial proportions and have a natural appearance.

FAQ
What makes male rhinoplasty different from other rhinoplasty procedures?
Male rhinoplasty is a unique procedure because it sculpts a uniquely masculine nose. Certain procedures that may be beneficial in sculpting a feminine nose may not apply to the male patient, so doctors must take specialized measures to create a satisfactory result.
How long does male rhinoplasty recovery take?
Patients are normally able to resume most parts of their normal routines after 2-3 weeks.
How much does male rhinoplasty cost?
Each patient’s nose is different, so each rhinoplasty treatment costs different. You will receive a quote after you meet with your surgeon or patient coordinator.
Is male rhinoplasty painful?
You may experience some soreness in the treated area after your procedure. Anesthesia is used during the procedure to maximize your comfort.
Are there any non-surgical alternatives to male rhinoplasty?
Yes, there are! Dermal fillers, injectables, and other facial enhancement treatments can help improve the shape of your nose, but none are considered to be as effective or last as long-term as a surgical rhinoplasty.
